Bed-days and costs associated with the inpatient burden of healthcare-associated infection in the UK

Costs of HAIs are essential to fully capture the benefits of IPC measures

Part of the Evaluation of Cost of Nosocomial Infections (ECONI) study. The study estimated the costs of different HAIs in Scotland and the UK. The total cost of HAIs for Scotland is estimated at £46,35 million. Extrapolated to the UK, this results in annual costs of £774 million. It was concluded that HAI remain a burden on the national health system. Especially lost bed-days are a major cost-factor.
