A study conducted at an academic safety-net hospital showed how a 5-year hospital-wide initiative to reduce healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and improve sepsis care was successful in improving adherence to bundles of care, hand hygiene and patient safety. The initiative was incentivised by the state Delivery System Reform Incentive Payment program and implemented several key interventions such as an awareness campaign, staff education, and clinical decision support. The primary outcomes monitored were rates of central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI), catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI), surgical site infection (SSI) and sepsis mortality. The results showed a reduction in HAI and sepsis mortality rates and sustained through 2019.
