MRGN

Multi-resistant Gram-negative rods. MRGN are a large group of bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics used as main therapeutics for severe infections (acylaminopenicillins, cephalosporins, carbapenems, quinolones). Regardless of the underlying resistance mechanism, MRGN are divided into two groups:

  • 3MRGN: rod-shaped bacteria that are resistant to 3 groups of antibiotics
  • 4MRGN: rod-shaped bacteria that are resistant to 4 groups of antibiotics

Most common Gram-negative pathogens with multiresistance include enterobacteria such as Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae as well as nonfermenters such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa or Acinetobacter baumannii.
