Human herpesvirus 6 is enveloped and has the form of an icosahedral capsid (spherical shape). It belongs to the Herpesviridae family.
The virus has two known subtypes: HHV-6A and HHV-6B. HHV-6A infections are completely apathogenic. HHV-6B triggers Exanthema subitum (three-day fever) in infants under two years old.
Transmission mainly occurs via droplets or particles in the air.
