RSV is an enveloped, helical virus belonging to the Paramyxoviridae family.

In babies and infants, it elicits respiratory tract infection. In adults, the virus may lead to common cold and inflammation of the middle ear.

Transmission mainly occurs via droplets or particles in the air.
