Chikungunya virus (CHIKV)

Chikungunya virus is an enveloped virus of the genus Alphavirus and belongs to the family of Togaviridae. It triggers Chikungunya fever characterised by fever, bone and muscle pain. Further symptoms may include rash, gastroenteritis, minor bleedings in the skin and mucous membranes, and very rarely haemorrhagic fever. Chikungunya virus is transmitted by different types of mosquitoes.
