Borrelia recurrentis is a Gram-negative, helical bacterium. The pathogen belongs to the family of spirochetes (Spirochaetaceae).

It may trigger the European epidemic relapsing fever (louse-borne relapsing fever).

Transmission mainly occurs via clothes lice (also body lice, Pediculus humanus corporis).
