A multimodal intervention to improve hand hygiene compliance in peripheral wards of a tertiary care university centre: a cluster randomised controlled trial.

Targeted multimodal interventions can increase hand hygiene compliance prior to aseptic procedures - here from 44% to 53%.

A multimodal intervention focusing on hand hygiene compliance prior to aseptic tasks increased compliance process specifically. The intervention included dissemination of teaching materials on aseptic procedures, regular feedback on hand hygiene compliance, and accessibility of disinfectants was improved with flexible hand rub dispensers. While the overall compliance did not change, compliance prior to aseptic procedures improved significantly from 44% to 53% in the intervention group.
