A multimodal intervention to improve hand hygiene compliance in peripheral wards of a tertiary care university centre: a cluster randomised controlled trial

Multimodal interventions are needed to gain better hand hygiene compliance

Establishing a multimodal intervention with focus on hand hygiene prior to aseptic tasks can increase hand hygiene compliance on peripheral wards.
The results show that interventions concentrating on aseptic tasks can affect hand hygiene compliance to WHO moment 2 (before aseptic tasks). Hand hygiene compliance to WHO moment 2 increased significantly (from 44 % to 53 %).
