Hygiene measures in case of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis caused by adenoviruses

All year round, adenoviruses are responsible for many infectious diseases, including epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC). Transmission paths are hands and contaminated objects. Hence, it is imperative to adhere to hygiene measures. Direct human-to-human transmission via eye discharge is also possible.

Preventing adenoviruses from spreading further in case a household member falls ill

• Avoid hand/eye contact
• After contact with infected people: thoroughly disinfect your hands; pay attention to the necessary exposure time
• Also disinfect surfaces and objects touched with hands and eyes
• Use separate toiletries (towels, washcloths, cosmetics)

To inactivate adenoviruses, best use a disinfectant with virucidal activity (pharmacy).
