Propionibacterium species
(bacterium)

Propionibacterium species are anaerobic, Gram-positive bacteria of the Propionibacteriaceae family and part of the natural microbial flora of skin, urogenital tract and intestine.

Propionibacteria may elicit postoperative surgical site infection – mostly after shoulder surgeries, rarely after hip and knee arthroplasty (surgical replacement of a joint).

The main transmission path is unknown.
