Effectiveness of a multidimensional approach to reduce ventilator-associated pneumonia in pediatric intensive care units of 5 developing countries: International Nosocomial Infection Control Consortium findings.

Multidimensional infection control programs can significantly reduce VAP rates in developed and developing countries.

The implementation of a multidimensional program significantly reduced the ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) rate in PICUs in developing countries. VAP rate decreased from 11.7/1,000 mechanical ventilator-days at baseline to 8.1/1,000 mechanical ventilator-days during the intervention period, resulting in a 31% reduction in VAP rate.
