Chlamydia (also Chlamydophila) pneumoniae is a Gram-negative, spherical bacterium of the Chlamydiaceae family.
The bacterium causes infections of the respiratory tract, but also atypical pneumonia that may lead to serious, sometime fatal complications in immunocompromised and elderly people.
Transmission mainly occurs via droplets or particles in the air.
