Coxiella burnetii is a Gram-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped bacterium belonging to the family of Coxielliaceae.

The bacterium is the cause of Q fever, characterised by an atypical pneumonia.

Transmission mainly occurs via droplets or particles in the air.
