Coxiella burnetii
(bacterium)

Coxiella burnetii is a Gram-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped bacterium belonging to the family of Coxielliaceae.The pathogen forms spores and is therefore extremely resistant to external influences such as dryness, heat or an acidic pH value.

The bacterium is the cause of Q fever, characterised by an atypical pneumonia.

Transmission mainly occurs via droplets or particles in the air.
